In the last few days, I have come across two sites which are basically trying to implement a similar idea.
The first one is Visual Web Gui, which takes ajax development into a completely different realm. Based on .NET technology, these guys provide you with libraries which let you develop web applications just like you develop desktop applications ie. winforms based, instead of webforms. I tried my hand at it, and the final product is usually quite cool. Though the community version is still not very advanced, but in some time it would be.
Another one was Dekoh, which also helps you create ajax widgets. You can read more about them at their blog.
Both of them are looking for developers, so if you have some time and would like to start working drop them a mail.
