I loved watching 300. By the end of the movie, I was myself ready to die for our man. All that talk about the free man, and the underdogs make a killing (in the real sense), made it a pleasure to watch.

Mr Bryan, the economist from Econlog liked the movie too it seems. He says he has watched it twice already. But no matter how much he liked it, he always seems to have a perspective of things much different than most. So this week, he is talking about the twisted sense of the Spartan free man philosophy.

He points out that in reality Sparta was a totalitarian society built on a particularly brutal form of state slavery. The Spartans, he says, killed Helots (slaves) just for the fun of it.

Finally, he sums it up beautifully with :

The sad historical truth is that “freedom” is usually a code word for no more than “the right of our tribe to collectively rule itself.”
