Techdirt, spills dirt over Reuter’s idea of machines reading news stories and making meaning investments based on the knowledge.
The human brain is quite a complicated gadget and utilizing computers to take intelligent decisions similar to the brain is probably one of the most difficult stuffs to do right now. Besides I doubt if any of the oh-so-cool web programmers would have anything to do with it. Something like this would be made is good old C/C++ or maybe even assembly. Java can’t be used to simulate the human brain, forget that, Java can’t be used to simulate a dog’s brain if it were required.
Techdirt says
First, Reuters has to do a good job meaningfully portraying the gist of the story in a few tags. And second, humans will still have to write the algorithms that interpret the information and act on it.
For someone who is as good as Techdirt, the reasoning is pretty shoddy. Firstly, they are taking so long because it is a difficult thing to do, and they are trying to do it right. Secondly, who do you think is going to do it? Aibo? It is humans who have the expertize, so they will have to write the algorithms. Anyways, just because you need a human to write the algorithm, doesn’t mean anything.
Also there is talk about the fact that it has been 14 years since it has been the next big thing. It takes 30-50 years for a human to learn to do it properly. How long should a computer take??
