Business Week has a fascinating article about Tellme CEO Mike McCue. Mike had started his company in 1999, a year before the internet industry stumbled. Over the next seven years, they went on adding newer stuff to phones which were never imagined before. Eventually, Mike McCue sold his company for over a billion dollars to Microsoft, last week.

The author, who was writing a business book on communication at the time, asked McCue what great communication was. McCue replied that it was the ability to explain in simle terms what the complicated technology was doing. He called it the ‘Mom test’ which basically means that if you can explain the idea to your mom, and she gets it, you have passed the test. No matter how simple the test seems, I can name very few products which would satisfy the test.

On the whole, the idea is that if your company can explain the crux of your business in less than 10 words, people would be a lot more willing to fund you or become your client. So the question is, what is your one liner?
