Telecom regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended that all ISP’s should route their traffic through the under-utilized National Internet Exchange. TRAI is hoping that this would bring down internet and broadband charges in India.

In a recent survey by TRAI, the overall customer satisfaction level was 5.42%. Only 7 of the 129 operators met the 95% benchmark.

NIXI is a non-profit Indian government agency established in 2003 to provide neutral Internet Exchange Point services in the country. Its main purpose is to facilitate handing over of domestic Internet traffic between the peering ISP members, rather than using servers in the US or elsewhere. This will enable more efficient use of international bandwidth and save foreign exchange. It will further improve the Quality of Services for the customers of member ISPs, by being able to avoid multiple international hops and thus lowering delays.
