37signals is one of the hottest companies around. And it has the smartest people you can find. (The creators of Ruby on Rails and the Prototype.js framework both work for them).
So when they decide to tell us how to make a web app, it makes sense to shut up and listen. I have listed the main points of the discussion below:
1. Make sure your idea is financially viable (Best way to do it - Use your common sense)
2. Keep at least about Rs 24 lakhs with you to start an enterprise level service (about 30k pounds)
3. Choose trusted people who are not too costly. Offer equity if required.
4. Buy just enough hardware to launch
5. Plan for scaling, but don’t worry about it too much.
6. Reduce your expenses
7. Don’t buy servers or new machines
8. Cut your features and get it up as soon as possible.
9. Barter services
10. Use as many free / cheap softwares as possible.
11. Forget the usual marketing, reply on word-of-mouth and viral nature.
12. Ask again, do you really need Venture funding.
13. Finally, be a little realistic.
